Images and Videos
Images are an important component of website design and can serve various purposes. They can grab visitors' attention, provide visual interest, and enhance the overall user experience. Images can also help to convey information and create a sense of atmosphere or mood. When selecting images for a website, it is important to choose high-quality, relevant images that are appropriate for the content and design of the site. Properly optimizing images for web use is also important to ensure they load quickly and do not negatively impact site performance.
Things to consider when selecting imagery for the web:
Is it good quality or pixelated?
Is the file size less than 1MB?
Is the image relevant to the page content?
Is it up-to-date?
Is the image copyright protected?
Do we have permission to use the image?
When possible, avoid stock imagery.
Downloading Images from Google
It is important to be mindful of copyright issues when using images on a website. Simply downloading images from Google or other search engines may result in copyright infringement, leading to legal issues and potential financial penalties. Many images found through a search engine are owned by the creators or other entities, and using them without permission is illegal. Instead, it is recommended to use stock photo websites or create original content for images to ensure that they are legally and ethically used on a website. It is also important to properly attribute any images used with permission or under a Creative Commons license to avoid misunderstandings or legal issues. By being mindful of copyright laws, we can avoid legal troubles and demonstrate our commitment to ethical and legal practices.
Photo Release
Other than those photographed for news coverage by independent news organizations, any individuals who may be identified by their image must sign a photo release form before they are photographed for a UIC project. The law requires that subjects under 18 years of age have a parent or guardian sign their consent. Download a photo consent form.
